An 8 Year Old Boy’s Thoughts On It’s A Wonderful Life

A conversation with my 8 year old son midway through It’s a Wonderful Life (my fave Christmas movie).

Corbin: Dad, are there any guns or stuff coming up in this movie?
Me: No Corbin.
Corbin: They are just walking around and around and talking and even kissing and everything is gray. This is a waste of my time.

Take Your Vitamins (These are Great)

I still do quite a bit of aerobic type endurance sports (rowing, cycling/spinning, some swimming/running). My 41 year old body doesn’t recover like it used to but these help. I put one ounce of each-super easy to dispense- in a small glass of orange juice and you don’t really taste them.

What I like. The Liquid Multivitamin doesn’t have 5000% of the U.S. Recommended Daily Allowance. It is more moderate with 100-150% of most vitamins (details here). This means I am not literally flushing money down the toilet unlike some of the overly juiced up vitamins which have ridiculous  amounts your body cannot assimilate. Liquid vitamins are also absorbed much more efficiently than pills. The Joint Formula (glucosamine and chondroitin) also is  a great dosage with high absorbtion.

I seem to recover more quickly when I am consistently on both of these. I also have better energy during the days.

Where to get it. Amazon has the multi-vitamin and the joint formula at the cheapest rates I have found.

(Note: I am not a doctor nor do I play one on TV though there is one in my family. This isn’t medical advice. Consult your physician first, not your lawyer afterwards.)

Big 2011 Goal (Hold Me Accountable)

For about a year and a half, God has been illuminating some key points in the narrative of the Bible that connect Eden to our eternity. I am currently reading through the Bible and finding three key purposes given in Eden for humanity, which sin undid and distorted, that Christ fulfills and hands back to us in eternity (note New Earth and not the overemphasis on heaven so often taught), which we get to participate in presently through our inclusion in Christ and His body as empowered by the Holy Spirit. I feel called to write these out in blog posts and if it turns into a book, published or an e-book, so be it. I will create a category under theology called Taking It From the Top or From Eden To Eternity and am hoping to write it out.

Here are the works that have added fuel to the fire. After You Believe by NT Wright, Heaven by Randy Alcorn, The Temple and the Church’s Mission by GK Beale, The Lost World of Genesis One by John Walton and influence from Pastor Eddy Leo of AbbaLove in Jakarta along with some distilling done in a think tank group. Still to be read for research are Dominion and Dynasty by Stephen Dempster among others.

So what do I need from you? A swift kick in the seat if you see too long between posts in this emerging category beginning in 2011…

On Anticipating the Kingdom (of Disney)

Several weeks ago we informed our kids via homemade fortune cookies that we were going to Disney World, a first for all us. Upon reading that news and after overcoming some disbelief, spontaneous dancing and cheering erupted. My oldest is now reading the Unofficial Guide To Walt Disney World cover to cover, a huge tome of 860 pages. There are discussions of how we will pack, what it is like to fly on a plane, and how they will get their school makeup work done early. Piper and I are constantly hearing their thoughts of how joyous an occasion it will be. Our future trip to a magical kingdom is deeply affecting our lives in the present.

And then God spoke to me, “Why doesn’t my coming Kingdom affect you as deeply?” Touche’, Lord, Touche’.

Quietness of Tongue: An Experiment

Years ago a friend gave me a personal challenge that I have never forgotten. The acronym is TBN, ironic, I know. Speak only if something is:

  1. True. Am I absolutely certain of the truth of something or is it simply hearsay. I don’t want to be trapped into trying to be the first to know something and getting the word out. Confession, I tend to fall prey to this at times. Don’t speak when 90% assured of truth but 100%.
  2. Beneficial. How can I make what I am saying redemptive?   I shouldn’t just critique without bringing solutions and a means to hope. Is the person I am sharing something with the one who needs to hear it? I shouldn’t be talking to person X about person Y if I have no intent of ever approaching person Y. Even then, the only reason X needs to know is if I am honestly seeking counsel. I have to be super careful here. Most of the time people are seeking sympathy about how someone treated them, not wise counsel as to their response.
  3. Necessary. Not everything is worth mentioning. What are the ramifications if I don’t say anything?

I am going to focus on this over the next several weeks. In some ways, it might mean that I become much quieter. However, I have found quieter people are usually perceived to be wiser. To be thought of that way would be just fine.

AT&T U-verse, Fox Soccer & Setanta. EPL.

Dear AT&T U-verse:

I just subscribed to your U-verse U200 primarly to get English Premier League Soccer (football in England). I did this by subscribing to your premium Setanta channel for an additional $15 a month. Now only two weeks in, I read that Setanta is going away and something called the Fox Soccer Plus is coming on March 1. I realize you are not behind these changes of venue. I get it. However, when I look to see how to get this via my U-verse, all I get is a black hole of communication. So I am going to call you and ask….hopefully you can still be my TV provider.

Okay. Nice AT&T Tech Lady told me that if I cancel Setanta ($15) and upgrade to U300 ($15, thus a wash) I would receive the Fox Soccer Network (soon to be in HD?) and the Fox Soccer Plus when they add it next month or two. This would be the best of news and makes me want to kiss AT&T U-verse full on the mouth. I pray you are right, Ms. Nice Tech Lady. If so, we’ll live in bliss. If not, a TV divorce might be happening.
